Navigating Professional and Personal Communication as a Model

Balancing Professionalism and Personality

Being a model means constantly being in the spotlight, both professionally and personally.

The way you communicate can significantly impact your career, whether it's through social media, emails, or in-person interactions.

It's crucial to strike a balance between maintaining professionalism and showcasing your unique personality.

Models are often considered public figures, which means that their communication style is always under scrutiny.

While it's essential to project an image that aligns with the brands and agencies you work with, it's equally important to let your personality shine through.

This balance can enhance your relatability and authenticity, qualities that are highly valued in today's industry.

Understanding Your Audience

One of the first steps in navigating communication as a model is understanding your audience.

Whether you're communicating with your model trainer, manager, photographer, mua, agent, or your followers on social media, tailoring your message to suit the audience is key.

Consider the expectations and preferences of each group to ensure your communication resonates effectively.

In professional settings, such as casting calls or photoshoots, with a model trainer or manager, a more formal tone is more appropriate.

Regardless if active or on vacation or just a break. Pro models are consistent in how well they communicate.

Conversely, when engaging with fans or followers online, a more casual and approachable demeanor can help build a stronger connection.

Striking this balance will help you manage multiple communication channels effectively.

How you consider time and schedule, communication with those you work with is not as lax as friends and family. Yet, many inexperienced models treat both the same.

Not pro models. They distinctly separate the two types. There is a level of courtesy and respect they show to those in the industry vs how they communicate casually with non-industry people.

While delaying replies with friends or family is acceptable and they may not care...doing so with a model manager, trainer, photographer, makeup artist, etc will care about your delays. It shows them you value their time.

While social media teaches people that you are considered more valuable by delaying answering, appearing busy or actually being busy, it's not the correct way when it comes to business associates as a pro model.

It's not about forcing anyone. Models freely choose to either be professional or not. It's a choice.

Nobody will twist your arm to be a more professional model. But, if you can't handle the level of structure, then don't audition for Pimn.

Delaying, ignoring msgs or emails, etc intentionally...can come across as uncaring, rude and inconsiderate.

Pros will not have patience for it for long. So distinguish between who is who In all communications. It's a set top standard in Pimn.

This is why it's essential to maintain always a more respectful mindset when doing so with them vs family.

Many newer, inexperienced models seem to often treat both the same in how they respond. This is not good.

It can completely crumble professional relationships. Family or friends don't often care how long it takes you to reply.

Professional people on the other hand... in the more structured schedule of modeling industry, may not be as patient with you as friends or family.

This is a critical note to always keep in mind.

Soon as you treat your model trainer, manager, any photographer or makeup artist, hair stylist with a lax approach to responding, they will not only start to become frustrated with you.... but may literally stop working with you altogether.

This includes anywhere you may be when you receive their message, email, txt, answering promptly as possible and the more consistent a model does this, the more reliable and professional she's considered to be.

Don't allow others to convince you otherwise that don't care or that can't handle you taking an important msg.

Your modeling is for you, not them. It's not meant to cause problems with friends or family.  Family is always important.

Remember, the person on the other end may not know you're having dinner out with friends or family.

So, if that's the case, simply respond faster and shorter. Being respectful and polite about. Don't get upset.

They likely didn't know. They can't see through your phone what you're doing.

That doesn't mean you need to be on your phone with them, being rude. It simply means you will be right back. It relates to your modeling. In many cases, you'll be challenged and tested on how quickly you answer. It is part of Pimn's pro model training habits to develop.

Why is this habit SO important?

Because a paid offer can be lost if you don't respond fast enough. It's about developing good habits. Habits that most amateur models will not have nor keep. These habits taught are meant to be continued.

If a brand company needs a model replacement asap and they emailed multiple options, they likely will pick that first option. You could miss a 5k shoot over a 5 min delay.

So, if a model trainer or manager gets frustrated at you for delaying answering, this is WHY. We are simply trying to help you as a model to change your habits.

If you dont take it seriously, they wont take you seriously, nor will your modeling offers take you seriously.

All it takes is a simple one time explaination for them to understand. That is, if they support you, they'll understand. If they don't support you, they'll likely complain.

You're not trying to be rude. If you have to excuse yourself to go private, do so. If it's an issue with an important person in your life that refuses to understand...all it takes is a quick private talk to them asking them to please understand.

One reason why the majority of Pimn models are independent and have nobody else to answer to and if they do...their significant other must verbally or sign agree they fully support their wife or girlfriend. This way, they understand from the start.

Pro Pimn Models are serious about their modeling. Pro models in the industry can end up working once or twice a week for a year and make 6 figures. That's why.

Which are you or which do you want to be? A $100 per shoot model or a $1000+ per shoot model? Never a cover model or often a cover model?

How you treat it can dictate where you go and who notices you.

Utilizing Social Media Wisely

Social media is a powerful tool for models, offering a platform to showcase work and connect with fans. However, it's important to use it wisely.

Curate your posts to reflect both your professional achievements and personal interests. This blend can help you establish a personal brand that is both captivating and professional. Keep harsh language off your professional profile. We've covered this in a prior post. Dos and don'ts.

When posting on social media, consider the impact of each post on your professional image.

Share behind-the-scenes moments to give followers insight into your life as a model, but maintain discretion to avoid oversharing personal details that might affect your professional reputation.
